Learn With AI, Not From It: 5 Rules for Students

For Students · للطلاب · 5-minute read

AI can be a great study partner. It can explain a grammar rule in a new way, give you extra practice or quiz you before a test. But if it does the thinking for you, you learn nothing, and the exam will show it. These five rules help you get the benefit without the risk.

ملخص بالعربية

١) حاول بنفسك أولًا. ٢) اطلب الشرح والتلميح لا الإجابة الجاهزة. ٣) تحقّق من كل شيء، فالذكاء الاصطناعي يخطئ. ٤) عملك يجب أن يكون بكلماتك، والتزم بقواعد مدرستك وكن صادقًا إن استخدمته. ٥) احمِ خصوصيتك ولا تشارك معلوماتك الشخصية.

Rule 1 · Try first, then ask

Your brain learns when it struggles a little. Try the question yourself first, even if you are not sure. Then use AI to check your thinking, not to replace it.

Rule 2 · Ask for explanations, not answers

The way you ask decides whether you learn. Compare:

❌ Instead of this…✅ Try this
“Write my essay about technology.”“Here is my essay plan. Ask me 3 questions that help me improve it.”
“What is the answer to question 5?”“I chose b) for question 5. Give me a hint if I’m wrong, but don’t tell me the answer.”
“Correct my paragraph.”“Show me my 3 most common mistakes and explain the rule for each one.”
“Summarise this text.”“Here is my summary of this text. What important idea did I miss?”

Rule 3 · Check everything

AI sounds confident even when it is wrong. It can invent facts, give incorrect grammar rules or use words above your level. Compare what it says with your textbook, your notes or your teacher. If two sources disagree, ask your teacher.

Rule 4 · Your words, your work

Work you hand in should be written by you. Follow your school’s rules about AI, and if you used it to help, say how. Copying AI text is not only unfair; it also means you will not be able to do it alone in the exam.

Rule 5 · Protect your privacy

Never share your full name, phone number, address, school ID, photos or passwords with an AI tool. Use only tools your school or parents allow.

Try it tonight · جرّبها الليلة

After you finish a practice test and mark it, paste one question you got wrong into an AI tool and write: “I answered ___ but the correct answer is ___. Explain why, then give me 3 similar questions to practise.” Then write the rule in your mistake log in your own words.
